"Hearts On Wheels" is a proposed feature-length documentary that will celebrate the rich cultural phenomenon of car restoration. Aimed at the millions around the world who are hooked on cars, it paints a picture of men - and some women - who strive to match and surpass the craftsmanship that was lavished on beautiful vehicles from another era.
These are folk artists -- artisans in steel and chrome and paint. They like to form clubs for their cars, each with its unique moniker, its own attitude. Often built up from rusted, clapped-out hulks, the restorations run a wide gamut - street machines from before WW II; the post-war finned "land yachts"; service vehicles such as ambulances, tow trucks and fire engines.
Many clubs stage events as benefits: for churches, for fallen local servicemen, for community organizations, and the guys look for ways to give a hand-up to local kids. Often they become role models for the younger generation, a position of honor they don't shrink from.
They have a lot of fun competing with each other, to see who can trick out his car or truck the best, who can be the coolest. They "strut their stuff," proudly, but with reserve.
These unique urban artists and their beautiful cars belong on screen. "Hearts On Wheels" will dig deep into their lives, to reveal what's behind the urge to revive these symbols of a bygone era.
